Connecting science & society
Communications & Scientific culture
IDIBELL's Communication and Fundraising Unit aims to improve public understanding of science focusing on the institute, its researchers and its value to society.
The unit carries out its mission through a wide range of initiatives and activities aimed at different audiences, including researchers, journalists and the media, politicians, students, science professors, the general public and, of course, members of IDIBELL.

CURA’T EN SALUT
Thanks to the “Cura’t en salut” audiovisual project, IDIBELL gave value to the cultural heritage of the Catalan language and popular knowledge. With 10 videos and social media quizzes, we spread practical health care concepts and dismantled misleading beliefs. We reached a wide audience, especially young and middle-aged people, who often do not come into contact with scientific content. Finally, the project highlighted the valuable contribution of IDIBELL researchers to biomedicine. “Cura’t en salut” was realized thanks to a Joan Oró grant from the FCRI and had the collaboration of Verificat, a fact-checking and media education non-profit organization.

Outreach
Sinergia
More than 300 people came to the Bellvitge Campus to discover IDIBELL’s work to improve people’s health. Throughout the morning, a gymkhana, an escape room, guided tours in the facilities and workshops for the general public brought the science of Bellvitge closer to all visitors. The day culminated in a final concert where everyone enjoyed the performance of the music band Dorigen. This year, most of the activities for people of all ages took place in the Parc de Bellvitge: a Zumba masterclass, a dance therapy session… Young and old, friends and families, scientists and non-scientists, everyone enjoyed all the activities that were carried out thanks to the collaboration of different entities in the neighborhood.

VACUNACCIÓ
Hand in hand with a good number of researchers from the IDIBELL and ICO Infections and Cancer research group, and coordinated by the Communication Unit, VacunAcció got into high school classrooms again. For the third year, the educational project challenged students to fight against misinformation and fake news, and learn more about vaccines: what they are, how they are obtained, what group immunity is, how vaccination schedules work, where we can find reliable information and how the anti-vaccine movements have negatively impacted global health. During two months in 2023, the activity was carried out with 1st year Baccalaureate students from the Escola Pia of Igualada.
VacunAcció is structured in a series of activities based on reflection and discovery combined with the students autonomous work: formation of expert groups for a debate, designing of a study to explore their immediate environment’s perception on vaccines and their effects, all while learning tools to search for reliable information. Finally, they elaborate a final product with a direct impact on society: an awareness campaign against anti-vaccination movements, or in favor of vaccines.
PAPILLOMATTACK
The Papillomattack educational tool consists of an informative video and a card game that teaches students about the existence of a virus called human papillomavirus, whose infection can be prevented with vaccinationm and also about early detection methods to identify any anomaly and thus be able to treat the infection it in time and prevent cervical cancer.
Papillomattack was led by the Infections and Cancer research group of IDIBELL, by the Cancer Epidemiology Research Program of ICO, and by the IDIBELL Communication Unit, with the collaboration of the Education and Health services of the L’Hospitalet city council. The first implementation of the activity took place during the 2023-24 academic year in five schools in L’Hospitalet.
